Urban Energy Works, LLC has designed and built some of the most sustainable spec homes in the U.S. The two condos (2350 and 2750 square feet), for which the award was presented, are located in the Water Hill neighborhood near downtown Ann Arbor. The all-electric homes are expected to have near zero utility bills. The homes reuse rainwater for toilets, laundry and irrigation, cutting consumption by half, while making extensive use of storm water control measures. The homes also feature certified sustainably-grown wood, a mow-free prairie landscape and cycling-centered design.

The Village of Dexter

The Village of Dexter has provided excellent examples of the positive results of collaboration through the removal of the Mill Creek dam, restoration of the Mill Creek watershed area, completion of the new Mill Creek Park, walkway to the Village from West Ridge subdivision, and the connector to the Border-to-Border Trail from Hudson Mills MetroPark through the Village to Dexter-Huron MetroPark. The projects would not have been possible without partnerships with the Washtenaw County Road Commission, Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA). The Village of Dexter’s efforts to return the watershed to its natural state has provided the opportunity for residents and guests to use and enjoy the Mill Creek Park. The trail network that connects to the MetroParks has made downtown Dexter a hub of recreational opportunities.
